In Haitian Voodoo, use of Fugu fish venom cocktails were used destroy everything but the brain stem of their victim to make them into mindless zombies. It would incapacitate the victim in a state that made them appear dead, but then were revived later using an antidote when sufficient brain damage had occurred
During world war I & II chemical warfare was a large part of R&D in the war and LSD was experimented with as a method of control or fear. Later, Charles Manson would use LSD to brainwash his "family" into committing the brutal murders that shocked the nation.
